Definition-
Expressions which have a meaning that is not obvious from the individual words.
It is a phrase or sentence whose meaning is not clear from the meaning of its
individual words and which must be learnt as a whole unit.

Write your understanding of what idiom
is with some definitions from any other sources.
Example of the idioms
Dig one’s grave-caused her own down fall. (If you are
negative about others and plan to do some harm to others, you will fall into
your own trap)
1) To
tear one’s hair- unbearably frustrated/desperate.
2) Spread
like wild fire- spread very fast.
3) With
an iron hand- with great severity.
4) Fell
on deaf ear- was ignored by others.
5) Dancing
to her manager’s tune- doing everything her manager demands.
6) Hit
the bull’s eye- reach the main point/achieved/success
7) Act
like an ape-behave badly/wildly/foolishly
8) Monkey
business- unethical/bad activities
9) Slipped
my mind- forgot
10) Racked
my brain- tried to remember hard but couldn’t.
11) Down
to earth- practical/simple and wise person
12) Got
out of hand-couldn’t control
13) Given
the thumbs up- has been approved/successful
14) Couldn’t
believe my ears- couldn’t believe the news/talk etc.
15) Stab
in the back- suspect sth harmful done to you by your trusted friends.
16) With
the above example of the idioms, make sentences from each idiom.
17) Write
down at least 5 idioms of your own (do not mention the discussed ones) and make
sentences of it.
Phrasal Verb
Definition-a verb combined with an adverb or
a preposition, or sometimes both to give a new meaning. It often bears no
relation to the meaning of either of the verb or preposition which is used with
it. So sometimes, it is problematic and difficult to understand and remember.
Example of the Phrasal Verbs
1) Abide
by- to accept or obey an agreement.
2) Back
away- to move backwards away from someone or sth, usually because you are
afraid
3) Back
down- to admit that you are wrong or that you have been defeated
4) Back
off- same as back away
5) Beef
up- to make sth stronger or more important
6) Bed
out- to move young plants inside and plant them in the ground.
7) Beg
off- to say that you cannot do sth that you are expected to do.
8) Boil
up- bad emotion (esp. anger) that you cannot control.
